Giving at the Heart of Hockey

Supporting the next generation of hockey players

“I don’t ever want a kid to say, ‘I can’t play hockey because I don’t have the money.’”

– Chris Capasso, Owner, Boston Knights Hockey

Each year Chris Capasso sees dozens of new players skate into his program, the Boston Knights. Some are Division 1 hockey players looking for the chance to play summer hockey, others are refining their game and getting the exposure they need to pursue opportunities in prep school, junior hockey, college, and beyond.

From equipment, training, fees, travel, and more, hockey is an expensive sport.

“There’s been plenty of times where I’ve let a kid play for free or given a few scholarships.”

This year, he formalized his generosity and expanded its impact by creating the Michael Capasso Memorial Scholarship, available to current and former Boston Knights players who need support in fulfilling their hockey dreams.

“I always knew I wanted to give back to the game that I love.”

In less than three weeks this summer, Capasso put together the 1st Annual Boston Knights Golf Outing, bringing current and former players and their families to the Hillview Country Club, in North Reading, MA for a round of golf. 124 players joined, raising over $4500 for the newly created scholarship program.

The scholarship is named after Capasso’s father, a beloved hockey dad who instilled in Chris his dedication to the game of hockey and its community. Michael Capasso was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and passed away in the summer of 2018.

“My dad was my hero, my role model and the man who brought me and brother to all our hockey practices, games, tournaments and anything hockey related. My dad was the man who never would charge you if you needed work on your car and the man who would give the shirt off his back for those in need.”

“Where do you want to play hockey?”
“I want to play for the Knights.”

Players are drawn to the Boston Knights. It’s not only because of the skilled athletes who have played in the program. It’s also because it’s fun. And supportive.

“We’re hard on our kids, but we want them to leave the practices and say ‘I like that coach, I can call that coach any time, he’s going to be there for me,’” explains Capasso. “Parents call me if kids are struggling in school and we talk to them. We do everything we can to make our players the best possible kids.”
