Day in the Life of a Recent Hire

Michelle Heffron | Insights from Black Diamond Networks

Starting a career after graduation can feel both exciting and uncertain, especially in a fast-paced industry like staffing and recruiting. For Michelle Heffron, joining Black Diamond Networks after graduating from Florida Atlantic University in December 2025 has been an experience centered around growth, relationship-building, and continuous learning.

Michelle first joined Black Diamond Networks as an intern before transitioning into a full-time role as an Associate Technical Recruiter supporting the Life Sciences & Technology (LS&T) division. After discovering the opportunity through Handshake, a platform commonly used by college students and recent graduates, she was drawn to the company’s fast-paced sales environment, growth opportunities, and culture of promoting from within.

“What stood out to me most about Black Diamond Networks was the potential for growth and the opportunity to build your own teams,” Michelle shared.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS EVERY DAY

Michelle’s role focuses on connecting talented professionals with companies working on important healthcare and life science innovations. A large part of her day revolves around building relationships, understanding career goals, and matching candidates with opportunities where they can succeed.

Her mornings typically begin with getting organized and mapping out priorities for the positions she is actively supporting. Throughout the day, she connects with consultants, joins team or client meetings, sources candidates, gathers marketplace insight, and collaborates closely with teammates to keep searches moving forward.

The role requires constant communication and adaptability, especially in an industry where hiring needs and priorities can change quickly. No two days are exactly the same, which keeps the work engaging and fast-moving.

WORKING IN A FAST-PACED ENVIRONMENT

Like many professionals in staffing and talent solutions, Michelle has quickly learned how important organization, communication, and relationship management are in a high-energy environment.

Throughout the day, she balances multiple conversations and priorities while staying closely connected to hiring trends, industry changes, and what companies are looking for in the market.

“My favorite part of my job is the momentum of it, the process of finding great candidates, filling critical roles, and seeing each successful placement come together,” Michelle said. “It’s a fast-paced, continuous cycle that keeps me engaged and motivated.”

That momentum and sense of progress are a large part of what makes recruiting both rewarding and challenging for recent hires entering the industry.

LEARNING THE LIFE SCIENCES INDUSTRY

One of the biggest learning experiences for Michelle has been understanding the wide variety of specialized skill sets across the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industries.

From validation and quality to regulatory and clinical functions, there is a tremendous amount of technical knowledge involved in the recruiting process. As she continues learning more about each area, she has become better equipped to understand both client needs and candidate experience.

The constant exposure to new industries, technologies, and market trends has helped her continue developing professionally while building confidence in the role.

ADVICE FOR RECENT GRADUATES

As someone who recently transitioned from college into the professional world, Michelle encourages graduates to focus on building connections early and staying open to learning opportunities.

“My advice for recent graduates is to not be nervous and to focus on building connections early,” she shared. “The more people you talk to, the more confident you become in yourself and your path.”

She believes networking plays a major role in career growth, especially in relationship-driven industries like recruiting and staffing, where conversations and connections often lead to new opportunities.
