Case Study: Engineering Project Solutions

Synopsis

From June of 2016 through early 2019 a Top 10 medical device company’s R&D team was fully allocated to a number of high priority pipeline projects. However, they needed a complete project team to define and advance a critical next generation enhancement to their cornerstone product.  Competitive pressures in conjunction with FDA warnings led the company to seek an external partner capable of quickly sourcing a complete team of senior level consultants with the requisite skills and experience needed to deliver the product against an aggressive timeline.

This project required 35+ consultants for various periods including a Director of Software Development, Sr. Principal Software Engineers (3), Embedded Software Engineers (5), Sr. Electrical Engineers (3), iOS Developer, a complete test team comprised of Automation Engineers (3), Sr. Quality Engineer, SQA Engineer, and Software Validation Engineers (5). Additionally, the team also included a Human Factors Engineer, Cyber Security Engineer, and a Systems Engineer.

Challenges

This international client has 40 locations around the world and internal subject matter experts scattered across multiple sites. A successful project solution staffing firm would need to quickly source a complete cross-functional project team with the skills required and the ability to work on-site at multiple locations for a large portion of the project.

Pending FDA warning letters coupled with a top competitor launching a key product enhancement drove the need for an aggressive project timeline.

Actions

During the bid process, Black Diamond Networks (BDN) searched our network of 5000+ consultants to identify multiple candidates for each position on the project team. Our account executives worked collaboratively with client stakeholders to quickly interview and select the members of the project team within one week of being awarded the project.

Within two weeks, the entire project team was in place and attending a kick-off meeting at the client’s office. Using our custom staffing model, BDN delivered an as-needed project team for a two-year project and ensured required resources were allocated on a month-by-month basis to deliver against the committed project schedule.

Results

The Black Diamond Networks project team worked collaboratively with the client’s subject matter experts to kick-off the project, create a Project Charter to define project Scope, Schedule, Resource Plan, Budget, Assumptions, and Risks, gain client stakeholder approval and ultimately execute per plan and deliver this critical legacy product enhancement on schedule. This successful project earned the client’s trust and has led to many subsequent projects.
